In a major boost to advanced cancer care, a cutting-edge High-Dose-Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy Unit has been introduced, bringing world-class, precision-driven treatment closer to patients at ShardaCare Healthcity  in North India.

The new technology marks a leap forward in the fight against cancer, combining innovation with compassion to improve outcomes and quality of life. The initiative is being led by Dr. Anil Thakwani, Senior Consultant and Head of Oncology.

Brachytherapy, also known as internal radiation therapy, delivers targeted radiation from within the body. Tiny radioactive sources are placed directly inside or near the tumour, allowing doctors to focus treatment precisely where it’s needed most — without harming surrounding healthy tissues. The new HDR Brachytherapy system, developed by Varian (formerly Nucleotron), uses a live Iridium-192 source to deliver localized radiation doses with exceptional accuracy.

“The precision of HDR Brachytherapy is a real game-changer, especially for gynaecological cancers like cervical cancer,” said Dr. Thakwani. “Traditional radiation methods can sometimes affect nearby organs such as the bladder and rectum, but HDR Brachytherapy confines radiation only to the tumour. This not only makes treatment safer but also reduces painful complications like cystitis, rectal ulcers, and fistula formation. Our goal is to treat the cancer effectively while protecting the patient’s overall well-being.”

He added that the oncology department has already performed over 50 successful Brachytherapy procedures for cervical, endometrial, prostate, and head and neck cancers. “With growing awareness, more patients are coming to us at early and treatable stages,” he said. “We’ve also treated many international patients, particularly from Africa, who often come with advanced cases — and even then, we’ve seen positive results.”
