Hands-on prosthetics training in Delhi signals shift towards smarter, patient-first artificial limbs
A quiet but meaningful shift is taking shape in India’s rehabilitation space, where better training could soon mean better lives for people using artificial limbs. At Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya National Institute for Persons with Physical Disabilities, a three-day programme led by Motorica India brought together students, clinicians and certified prosthetists to work directly with evolving technologies in upper-limb prosthetics.
The focus was precise but impactful—improving “socket technology” for transhumeral myoelectric prostheses. In simple terms, this is the part of an artificial arm that fits over the body and connects with muscle signals to enable movement. If the fit is off, the device becomes uncomfortable or even unusable. If it is right, it can restore a surprising level of independence, allowing users to perform daily activities such as eating, dressing, and engaging in hobbies without assistance.
Inside labs and workshops, participants moved from theory to practice. They handled the casting, lamination, and fitting trials. They tested devices. They adjusted settings using apps. In one session, live EMG (electromyography) assessments showed how tiny electrical signals from muscles are captured and translated into motion. It looked almost invisible on screen. But for a user, it can mean the difference between lifting a cup and dropping it.
“Prosthetics are changing rapidly, and that makes continuous upskilling more important than ever,” said G. Pandian, Head of Department at the institute. "We must remain proactive, paving the way for improved outcomes for both practitioners and users."
That urgency is backed by science. Studies in rehabilitation medicine show that comfort, proper fit and user training directly influence whether a person continues using a prosthetic limb long term. Poorly fitted devices are often abandoned. Good design, combined with patient-specific calibration, improves both function and confidence, leading to higher rates of long-term use and satisfaction among prosthetic limb users.
Kavinder Beniwal, Chief Operational Officer at Motorica India, underlined the human angle. “Our vision is to make advanced prosthetic solutions more intuitive, more reliable, and more closely connected to the lives of the people who use them,” he said, adding that training must evolve as fast as technology.
The initiative also ties into a broader push for structured learning, including online modules under Motorica’s educational platform. One session, “Human First: Patient Interaction in Prosthetic Care", explores not just physical recovery but also the emotional and social adjustments after amputation.
For India’s growing community of Divyangjan, such collaborations may seem technical on the surface. In reality, they are deeply personal. Better training today could mean a steadier hand, a firmer grip, and a more independent tomorrow.
