Hantavirus Explained: The Rare Rodent-Borne Disease Behind Growing Global Attention

As health officials continue monitoring recent hantavirus cases linked to international travel, the little-known virus has suddenly become a topic of global discussion. While experts insist hantavirus is not another COVID-19-style pandemic threat, doctors warn that the infection remains dangerous because of its high fatality rate and ability to cause severe respiratory illness.


Hantaviruses are a group of viruses mainly carried by rodents such as rats and mice. Humans usually become infected after coming into contact with infected rodents or their urine, saliva, and droppings. In many cases, people inhale contaminated dust particles while cleaning enclosed or poorly ventilated areas where rodents are present.

Although infections remain relatively uncommon worldwide, the disease can become extremely serious once transmitted to humans. Depending on the region and the virus strain involved, hantavirus infections can affect the lungs, heart, kidneys, and blood vessels.

In North and South America, hantaviruses are known to cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, or HCPS, a severe respiratory disease that can rapidly damage the lungs and heart. Health experts say the condition is particularly alarming because fatality rates in severe cases can reach nearly 50%.

In Europe and Asia, hantaviruses are more commonly associated with haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, also known as HFRS, which mainly affects the kidneys and circulatory system.

Among all hantavirus strains, the Andes virus has drawn the most concern from health authorities because it is one of the few known strains capable of limited human-to-human transmission. Found mainly in parts of Argentina and Chile, the Andes virus spreads far less easily than respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 or influenza. Experts say transmission generally requires prolonged and close contact, usually among family members or intimate partners.

Despite concerns over person-to-person spread, scientists stress that most hantavirus infections still occur through exposure to infected rodents rather than casual human contact.

Doctors say one of the biggest challenges with hantavirus is that its early symptoms often resemble common viral illnesses, making diagnosis difficult in the initial stages. Patients may first experience fever, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Symptoms can appear anywhere between one and eight weeks after exposure.

In severe cases, the infection may rapidly progress to breathing difficulties as fluid builds up in the lungs. Some patients may also develop kidney failure, bleeding disorders, or dangerously low blood pressure.

Medical experts emphasize that there is currently no approved antiviral cure or vaccine specifically designed for hantavirus infections. Treatment mainly focuses on supportive hospital care, including careful monitoring of lung, heart, and kidney complications. Doctors say patients who receive early intensive care have significantly better chances of survival.

Diagnosing hantavirus can also be complicated because its symptoms overlap with illnesses such as influenza, COVID-19, dengue, pneumonia, leptospirosis, and sepsis. As a result, doctors rely heavily on patient history, including possible rodent exposure, occupational risks, travel history, and contact with infected individuals.

Health authorities around the world continue to stress that prevention remains the best protection against hantavirus infection. Experts recommend keeping homes and workplaces clean, sealing rodent entry points, storing food safely, and avoiding direct contact with rodent waste.

They also warn people not to sweep or vacuum rodent droppings because that can release contaminated particles into the air. Instead, contaminated areas should first be dampened before cleaning to reduce the risk of inhalation.

The World Health Organization says it is working closely with countries to improve surveillance, laboratory testing, outbreak response, and public awareness regarding hantavirus infections. WHO officials are also promoting a broader “One Health” strategy that recognizes the close link between human health, animal populations, and environmental conditions.

While experts say hantavirus outbreaks remain rare compared to global respiratory pandemics, they caution that continued monitoring is essential in an era of increased international travel and emerging zoonotic diseases.

For now, scientists maintain that awareness, hygiene, and rodent control remain the strongest defenses against a virus that, although uncommon, can quickly turn deadly.
