How You Sit Could Decide Your Dementia Future: Researchers
A large international study discovered that not all sitting is equally harmful, with researchers warning that prolonged periods of mentally passive activities such as watching television may increase the risk of dementia, whereas more engaging seated tasks like reading or office work may help protect brain health over time.
The findings, published in Elsevier's American Journal of Preventive Medicine, come at a time when the world's ageing population is confronting an increasing dementia burden. The disorder is currently the third highest cause of death and the seventh leading cause of disability among older persons worldwide, making preventative efforts a public health priority.
The research team, lead by Mats Hallgren of the Karolinska Institute, examined data from approximately 20,800 adults aged 35 to 64 over a 19-year period. The researchers investigated how different types of sedentary behaviour affected dementia risk by matching survey responses to national health data in Sweden.
"While all sitting requires minimal energy expenditure, it can be distinguished by the level of brain activity. Dr Hallgren stated, "How we use our brains while sitting appears to be a critical determinant of future cognitive functioning and, as we have shown, may predict dementia onset."
Simply put, cognitively passive sedentary activity refers to activities in which the brain is not actively engaged, such as prolonged television viewing. In contrast, cognitively active sedentary behaviour includes things that demand thought and concentration, such as reading, writing, or desk work. A longitudinal study, such as this one, follows the same people for several years to see how lifestyle factors influence health outcomes.
According to the study, people who spend more time doing mentally inert activities are more likely to get dementia later in life. However, replacing even a portion of that time with mentally engaging activities resulted in a meaningful reduction in risk. Importantly, these advantages were evident even when total sitting time remained high, implying that the quality of sedentary activity is just as important as the quantity.
Previous research has connected extended sitting to illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression. This study adds a new element by demonstrating that brain involvement during sedentary time may have an impact on long-term cognitive health.
"Sedentary behaviour is a common but changeable risk factor for various health problems, including dementia. Our research provides insight that not all sedentary behaviours are the same; some may raise the risk of dementia, while others may be protective. It is critical to stay physically active as we age, but also cognitively active—especially when sitting," Dr Hallgren emphasised.
Researchers point out that, while the study found strong connections, it does not prove direct cause and effect. Controlled trials are required to corroborate these results. However, given the huge sample size and broad geographic coverage in Sweden, the findings are widely applicable.
With most adults sitting for up to 10 hours each day, scientists suggest modest changes, such as selecting reading over passive screen time, could play a critical role in lowering dementia risk and enhancing quality of life in their later years.
