Hungry Mosquitoes at City Edges: Brazil Study Rings Alarm for India’s Expanding Megacities
A new scientific study from Brazil has issued a grim warning to fast-developing cities in India and South Asia: as forests vanish and concrete expands, mosquitoes are changing their behaviour in ways that dramatically enhance the risk of severe diseases in urban populations.
The study, published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, looked into mosquito feeding patterns in the remains of Brazil's Atlantic Forest, a biodiversity-rich zone that has been reduced to around one-third of its original size owing to human expansion. The findings show that mosquitoes that have lost their typical animal hosts are increasingly resorting to humans for blood, resulting in a new and deadly interaction between cities and illness.
"Here we show that the mosquito species we captured in Atlantic Forest remnants have a clear preference for feeding on humans," said senior author Dr Jeronimo Alencar, a scientist from Rio de Janeiro's Oswaldo Cruz Institute.
The study was conducted at two protected forest sites in Rio de Janeiro state, where researchers collected mosquitos using light traps. Female mosquitoes that had recently fed were analysed in laboratories using DNA sequencing, a technology that reads genetic "barcodes" in blood to determine which animal or human the mosquito had bitten. Simply put, scientists compared blood traces found inside mosquitos to a genetic library of known species.
Out of the 1,714 mosquitoes caught, 145 had fed on blood. The majority of the blood meals detected were from humans, with smaller quantities coming from birds, amphibians, rodents, and other species. Some mosquitoes dined on multiple species, including animals and people.
"This is critical because, in an environment like the Atlantic Forest with a wide range of potential vertebrate hosts, a preference for humans significantly increases the risk of pathogen transmission," said co-author Dr Sergio Machado of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
The ramifications for India are both immediate and worrying. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Dhaka already have annual outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya. Urban growth near natural ecosystems, such as the Aravalli Hills in Delhi-NCR, Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai, and the forested outskirts of Bengaluru and Chennai, parallels the conditions outlined in Brazil.
As forests are removed, many animals vanish. Mosquitoes, which used to feed on a variety of species, have adapted by congregating around human areas. "With fewer natural alternatives, mosquitoes are pushed to seek out new, alternate blood sources. They end up eating more humans for convenience, as we are the most common host in these places," Machado said.
These bites aren't just a nuisance. Similar mosquitoes in Brazil transmit illnesses such as yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. The same ecological constraints in South Asia could exacerbate current diseases or lead to the emergence of new ones.
The researchers point out that their data set is still small, emphasising the need for additional detailed investigations, particularly on tracking mixed blood meals. Nevertheless, the message is plain. "Knowing that mosquitoes in an area have a strong preference for humans serves as an alert for transmission risk," Mr Machado added.
"This allows for targeted surveillance and prevention actions," Alencar said. "In the long term, this may lead to control strategies that consider ecosystem balance."
For India's planners and public health officials, the report redefines urban development as more than just an economic concern. Every high-rise built on a forest border may represent a new frontline in the fight against infectious disease.
