Granules Pharmaceuticals Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyderabad-based Granules India Limited, has reached an important regulatory milestone in a closely controlled market for ADHD drugs. This is a big boost for India's pharmaceutical industry in the US. 

The US Food and Drug Administration has given the company tentative approval for its Abbreviated New Drug Application for Amphetamine Extended-Release Orally Disintegrating Tablets, which are the generic form of ADZENYS XR-ODT. The certification includes six different strengths of the drug, which will be made at Granules' US plant in Chantilly, Virginia. 

Amphetamine is a stimulant drug that is often given to people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a disorder that makes it hard to pay attention, regulate impulses, and stay active. "Extended-release" means the drug is delivered slowly throughout the day, so you don't have to take it as often. "Orally disintegrating tablets" dissolve on the tongue without water, making them easier for kids and adults who have trouble swallowing pills. 

Tentative approval doesn't mean that sales can start right away, but it does mean that the medicine meets US requirements for safety, quality, and effectiveness, as long as any patent or exclusivity issues are worked out. IQVIA says that the US market for this medicine is worth about USD 172 million. There is just one authorised generic and one authorised generic; therefore, there isn't much competition right now. 

This location is important for Granules. Less competition sometimes means that prices are better and it takes less time to get into the market once full permission is given. It also shows that Indian drug businesses are moving beyond just copying drugs and into making more complicated ones that need more regulatory and manufacturing skills.

The approval has effects that go beyond only the balance sheets. India has long been known for its health diplomacy, which is based on its ability to provide cheap, reliable generic pharmaceuticals. As neurodevelopmental problems get more attention around the world, Indian companies who make things in the US build confidence, lower supply risks, and discreetly boost India's soft power in global healthcare.
