India’s Health Risks Emerging Earlier, Remaining Undetected Longer: Apollo Report
India’s most common health risks are now appearing at younger ages and often remaining undetected for longer periods, according to the latest Health of the Nation 2026 report released by Apollo Hospitals on World Health Day.
The sixth edition of the report, based on more than three million preventive health assessments conducted across Apollo’s network in 2025, points to a significant shift in the country’s health landscape and underscores the need for a proactive approach to healthcare.
The findings reveal that non-communicable diseases are increasingly affecting younger populations. Nearly two-thirds of young adults are already at risk, while troubling trends are also visible among working professionals. Among individuals under the age of 30, one in five was found to be prediabetic. At this stage, the condition remains reversible, and data shows that 28 per cent of those who intervened were able to return to normal levels, compared to only 7 per cent among individuals over 50.
Concerns around obesity and metabolic health are also rising. More than half of those assessed were found to be overweight and had abnormal cholesterol levels. Nutritional deficiencies are widespread as well, with nearly 70 per cent showing Vitamin D deficiency and close to half having low Vitamin B12 levels. In addition, nearly two-thirds of younger individuals demonstrated poor flexibility, strength, or balance, factors associated with higher cardiovascular risk, falls, and reduced longevity.
Among the working population, with an average age of 38, the report highlights a high prevalence of lifestyle-related conditions. A majority were overweight, nearly half had either prediabetes or diabetes, and a significant proportion were living with high blood pressure, often without being aware of it.
The report also draws attention to gender-specific health risks, particularly among women. Anaemia remains a persistent issue, alongside increasing levels of central obesity with age. Notably, breast cancer is being detected earlier in India compared to Western populations. The average age of detection through routine screening was found to be 51 years, nearly a decade earlier than in many developed countries. Among women over the age of 40 who underwent screening, a small but significant number were diagnosed with breast cancer despite showing no symptoms, highlighting the importance of early and regular screening.
Another key insight from the report is that routine blood tests alone may not be sufficient to detect several underlying conditions. A large proportion of individuals diagnosed with fatty liver through ultrasound had normal liver enzyme levels, indicating that the condition can go unnoticed without imaging. Similarly, nearly half of asymptomatic individuals who underwent coronary calcium scoring showed early signs of atherosclerosis. The study also points to the role of gut health, noting that individuals with better metabolic profiles tend to have more diverse gut bacteria, while those with multiple health conditions show a decline in gut diversity.
Commenting on the findings, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, Founder Chairman of Apollo Hospitals, emphasised that healthcare must move beyond routine testing to a more personalised and precise approach. He noted that true health is proactive and tailored to individual needs, rather than a reactive response to symptoms.

She stressed the need for a more personalised approach that considers a woman’s biology, life stage, and risk profile.
Dr. Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, underscored the importance of early and continuous intervention, noting that timely health checks can help detect serious conditions such as heart disease and cancer at early, more treatable stages. She also pointed to the growing role of predictive healthcare, which integrates data, lifestyle factors, and advanced diagnostics to identify risks before symptoms appear.
The report further highlights the importance of follow-up care and sustained intervention. Individuals who adhered to medical advice and treatment plans showed measurable improvements in conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, reinforcing the idea that early detection must be paired with consistent action.
Based on anonymised medical records, clinical evaluations, and AI-driven risk analysis across Apollo’s hospitals and diagnostic centres, the report concludes that India must transition towards a predictive, continuous, and personalised healthcare model.
As health risks become increasingly complex and often remain asymptomatic, early detection and timely intervention are emerging as critical tools in improving long-term health outcomes.
