Inflammation Linked to Fatigue in Breast Cancer Patients | Cancer Research Updates
Fatigue is one of the most prevalent and distressing symptoms experienced by cancer patients. It can make patients physically worn out, emotionally fatigued, and mentally muddled. Unlike typical weariness, cancer-related fatigue does not always improve with rest and can last long after therapy is completed.
New research published in CANCER, the American Cancer Society's peer-reviewed publication, explains why this weariness develops. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), examined 192 women with early-stage breast cancer to better understand the role of inflammation in various types of fatigue.

Blood samples were taken prior to treatment or radiation and monitored for 18 months. Participants also described four forms of fatigue: general, physical, emotional, and mental.
The study found that higher levels of TNF-α, sTNF-RII, and IL-6 were associated with increased fatigue, including symptoms of tiredness and exhaustion. Physical exhaustion, including weakness and heaviness, was linked to TNF-α, sTNF-RII, and CRP. Higher levels of TNF-α and sTNF-RII were associated with less emotional exhaustion, while mental weariness had no meaningful relationship with these inflammatory markers.
"Our findings indicate that inflammation plays a role in some aspects of cancer-related fatigue, but not others, and that these effects persist well after treatment," stated lead author Julienne E. Bower, PhD, of UCLA. "This is critical for developing targeted treatments for this common and disabling symptom."
According to experts, knowing the biological foundations of weariness might help doctors develop more effective treatment approaches, ranging from anti-inflammatory drugs to lifestyle changes such as exercise and food. This study gives patients hope that future medicines will address fatigue more effectively, thereby increasing quality of life during and after cancer treatment.
