Medanta Launches 24x7 Chest Trauma Support Service to Strengthen Emergency Care in North India
Every day, more than 450 people lose their lives in road accidents across India. For many victims, the tragedy is not just the impact of the crash, but what happens in the crucial minutes that follow. Severe chest injuries — among the most life-threatening consequences of road accidents — demand immediate and expert medical attention. Yet in many parts of North India, access to specialized chest surgeons at the right moment remains a challenge.
In an effort to bridge this critical gap, Medanta has launched a dedicated 24x7 Chest Trauma Support Service aimed at strengthening emergency response and improving survival outcomes. The free-of-cost initiative enables doctors at primary and secondary healthcare centers to instantly connect with Medanta’s team of experienced chest surgery specialists for real-time clinical guidance.
The service is designed to support frontline medical teams who often face the daunting task of managing complex chest trauma cases without specialist backup. Injuries to the lungs, heart, windpipe, food pipe, and major blood vessels can deteriorate rapidly, and even minor delays in decision-making can significantly impact outcomes. Through virtual consultations, Medanta’s experts will help doctors interpret imaging, assess clinical parameters, and determine the most appropriate treatment strategy for patients.
The initiative is being led by Dr. Arvind Kumar, Chairman of the Institute of Chest Surgery at Medanta. According to Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director of Medanta, the program reflects the institution’s guiding philosophy, “Har Ek Jaan Anmol,” meaning every life is invaluable. He emphasized that Medanta is home to one of India’s largest and best-equipped Institutes of Chest Surgery, and this new service will allow smaller healthcare facilities to benefit from the hospital’s expertise, ensuring timely and appropriate intervention when it matters most.
Road accidents continue to be one of the leading causes of death among Indians aged 15 to 45 years. Chest trauma accounts for 10 to 15 percent of all trauma admissions in hospitals, a figure that rises dramatically to nearly 70 percent in polytrauma cases. Despite this, specialized thoracic trauma centers and trained experts are largely concentrated in major cities, often leaving smaller towns and rural areas without immediate access to advanced care. The result can be delayed treatment, preventable complications, and increased mortality.
Dr. Arvind Kumar noted that while most chest trauma cases can be managed conservatively, delays in surgical intervention or improper management can significantly increase morbidity. Through this service, he said, the goal is to empower frontline doctors with immediate expert support, enabling them to manage complex cases more confidently and refer patients promptly when advanced care is required.
Beyond providing round-the-clock consultations, the Chest Trauma Support Service will also focus on improving treatment standards. Medanta plans to guide healthcare providers on standardized chest tube insertion, a critical procedure in managing chest injuries that, when performed correctly and promptly, can reduce complications and improve outcomes. The hospital will also conduct training programs, webinars, and workshops for doctors to strengthen trauma care skills across the region.
In addition, Medanta will establish a dedicated chest trauma registry to systematically collect data on injury patterns, interventions, and patient outcomes. This effort is expected to support quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, and evidence-based policy planning, contributing to the broader strengthening of trauma care systems nationwide.
Initially covering Haryana, Punjab, and Western Uttar Pradesh, the service is expected to expand in the future. By making specialist expertise accessible beyond metropolitan centers, Medanta aims to ensure that critical minutes after an accident are not lost due to lack of guidance. In a country where road trauma continues to claim thousands of lives each year, this initiative represents a meaningful step toward giving more patients a fighting chance at survival and recovery.
