NephroPlus Launches Nationwide Organ Donation Pledge Campaign on World Kidney Day
Marking World Kidney Day, NephroPlus, Asia’s largest dialysis care network, has launched a nationwide organ donation pledge campaign in partnership with the MOHAN Foundation to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage people across India to formally pledge their organs.
The initiative aims to highlight the life-saving impact of organ donation while addressing the growing gap between the demand for organs and their availability in the country.
As a major dialysis care provider supporting thousands of patients with kidney failure, NephroPlus says it sees firsthand the urgent need for kidney transplants and the long, uncertain wait many patients endure while hoping for a suitable donor. Through the campaign, the organisation hopes to spark wider public conversations about organ donation and inspire more people to take the step of pledging their organs.
The campaign has set a target of mobilising more than 10,000 organ donation pledges. Organisers say each pledge could potentially save or improve several lives by making vital organs available to patients who urgently need transplants.
India continues to face a severe shortage of donor organs. According to available estimates, more than 82,000 patients are currently waiting for organ transplants across the country, including over 60,000 people awaiting kidney transplants. Experts say the annual need for kidney transplants alone is estimated at nearly 1.75 to 2 lakh, yet only around 13,000 such procedures are performed each year.
Speaking about the initiative, Kamal Shah, Co-Founder of NephroPlus, said that every day the organisation encounters patients battling kidney failure while waiting for a transplant that could transform their lives.
“Organ donation has the power to offer hope to thousands of families,” he said, adding that the campaign aims to encourage people to take a simple but meaningful step by pledging their organs and becoming part of a life-saving movement.
Dr. Bhanu Chandra, Manager-Operations and Senior Transplant Coordinator at the MOHAN Foundation, said that awareness and timely pledging play a crucial role in improving organ donation rates in India.
“Partnerships like this help take the conversation about organ donation to more communities and encourage people to make informed decisions that can ultimately save lives,” she said.
Dr. Ratan Jha, Clinical Director of the Department of Nephrology at CARE Hospital, also emphasised how kidney donation can dramatically change the lives of patients suffering from end-stage renal disease.
As part of the initiative, NephroPlus has created a dedicated campaign page on its website that will guide individuals through the process of registering their pledge via the MOHAN Foundation’s official organ donation platform.
The campaign will also extend beyond online outreach. NephroPlus dialysis centres across India will host awareness activities and facilitate on-ground pledge participation. Informational brochures and QR codes will be placed at centres to help patients, caregivers and visitors easily access the pledge platform and learn more about organ donation.
Organisers say the initiative will also include a series of awareness drives and digital outreach efforts aimed at educating communities about the importance of organ donation while addressing common myths and misconceptions.
By bringing together patients, healthcare providers and the broader community, NephroPlus hopes the campaign will help build momentum for a larger social movement around organ donation and contribute to narrowing the gap between the demand and availability of life-saving organs in India.
