New Cancer Drugs Aim to Help Patients Live Better, Not Just Longer, ASCO 2026 Data Suggest
For many people battling advanced lung cancer, the biggest fear is not only whether the disease will spread but also whether treatment itself will make daily life unbearable. New findings going to be presented at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting suggest that a new generation of precision cancer medicines may be starting to change that equation.
At the meeting, Boehringer Ingelheim is going to unveile fresh clinical data showing that patients with a rare and aggressive form of lung cancer reported feeling physically better within a week of starting treatment with HERNEXEOS (zongertinib), an oral targeted therapy designed for HER2-mutant advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Unlike traditional chemotherapy, which attacks both healthy and cancerous cells, targeted therapies aim to block specific genetic errors that drive tumour growth. HER2 mutations are among those dangerous genetic changes. They are found in a small but difficult-to-treat group of lung cancers and are linked to faster disease progression.
The new feedback from the Phase Ib Beamion LUNG-1 trial with 71 patients showed that after treatment with zongertinib, patients felt better in how they moved, breathed, and did everyday activities. Patients also reported a relatively low burden of side effects over time. Researchers used internationally recognised quality-of-life questionnaires to measure whether patients could walk more easily, breathe better, and carry out daily tasks with less discomfort.
“In the past year, Boehringer has meaningfully advanced the NSCLC treatment landscape through multiple regulatory approvals of zongertinib across markets,” said Itziar Canamasas. She added that the company’s broader goal was to expand “precision cancer care” across several tumour types.
Doctors say such patient-focused measurements are becoming increasingly important in cancer medicine. Many advanced cancer patients stop treatment early because the physical toll becomes too severe.
“For people living with HER2-mutant advanced NSCLC, it’s especially important to understand how treatment affects how they feel and function in daily life,” said Joshua K. Sabari. He noted that patients receiving zongertinib reported improvements in both symptom burden and physical functioning.
Researchers will also present early evidence suggesting that zongertinib may work beyond lung cancer. Small, ongoing studies in metastatic colorectal, oesophageal, and breast cancers showed encouraging tumour responses with manageable safety profiles. In one colorectal cancer analysis, researchers observed tumour shrinkage in 42% of patients, while disease control was seen in 95%.
Meanwhile, another experimental therapy called obrixtamig showed promising early results in extensive-stage small cell lung cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease. The treatment belongs to a newer class called T-cell engagers, designed to help the body’s immune cells directly identify and attack cancer cells. In the Phase I DAREON-8 trial, the treatment combination produced tumour responses in 73% of patients.
Experts warn that larger trials are still necessary. Yet the findings presented at ASCO reflect a wider shift in global oncology research. Increasingly, scientists are asking not only whether patients survive longer but whether they can continue to live more normally while fighting cancer.
