New CDC-Linked Study Warns Most U.S. Teens Are Now Severely Sleep-Deprived
A growing collection of scientific evidence is raising concerns about what academics refer to as a silent public-health emergency: a generation of youngsters who are sleeping dangerously little. A new analysis of statistics from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), published recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), finds that more than half of American teenagers now sleep fewer than five hours each night, the lowest level ever recorded.
Researchers at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine looked at long-term patterns in the CDC's Youth Risk Behaviour Survey, a national dataset that analyses health risks among teens. Their examination of survey data collected from 2007 to 2023 reveals a substantial and concerning fall in teen sleep duration across the country.
Medical guidelines define "very short sleep" as fewer than five hours. Doctors warn that such severe sleep deprivation harms the brain, metabolism, and mental health of teenagers whose bodies are still developing.
According to the data, the proportion of teenagers who receive the recommended eight hours of sleep per night has declined drastically, from more than 30% in 2007 to fewer than 25% by 2023. Simultaneously, the number of teenagers surviving on less than five hours has increased considerably across practically every demographic category.
Experts believe the pattern is not confined to kids who have apparent risk factors like depression, substance abuse, or excessive screen time. Instead, sleep deprivation is increasing even among teenagers who do not have these issues, implying that broader socioeconomic pressures are driving the trend.
"Teens across the country are getting less sleep, and the problem appears to be societal," the researchers wrote in their study.
Medical researchers have been concerned with adolescent sleep for over a century. In 1905, research published in The Lancet analysed sleep habits among boys in British boarding schools and warned that late-night lighting was preventing students from receiving adequate slumber. The writers famously decided that "late to bed and early to rise is neither physiological nor wise."
The public became concerned again in the 1950s, when radio and television were blamed for keeping adolescents awake late at night. Today, scientists associate insufficient sleep with overstimulation, mental health issues, accidents, and academic difficulties.
However, recent data indicate that the problem has reached an unparalleled level.
Sleep is vital for teenagers because it allows the brain to process information, regulate emotions, and promote physical growth. Regular sleep deprivation leads to the deterioration of key biological systems. According to researchers, prolonged sleep deprivation is linked to anxiety, sadness, poor academic performance, and delayed neurocognitive development – which refers to how the brain learns, remembers, and solves issues.
There are also physical health concerns. According to studies, kids who get too little sleep are more likely to acquire obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life.
"These trends highlight the need for population-level interventions for teenagers. For example, later school start times can help with longer sleep, which may contribute to improved mental health outcomes and more academic engagement," said T. Greg Rhee, a psychiatric epidemiologist at the University of Connecticut and the study's lead author.
Simply put, a "population-level intervention" involves altering the environment around youth rather than blaming individual behaviours. Researchers believe that in order for teenagers to re-establish healthy sleep patterns, society may need to reconsider early school schedules, excessive homework loads, and late-night extracurricular activities.
Rhee and his colleagues note that more research is needed to determine which measures could help teenagers' sleep health. One possibility being investigated is whether lessening academic and extracurricular obligations in the evenings may allow youngsters to go to bed earlier and get the recommended sleep duration.
For now, the evidence points to a worrying reality: modern teenagers are becoming the most sleep-deprived generation ever recorded, a hormonal stress that scientists believe may have long-term ramifications for both health and learning.
