New Hope in Ovarian Cancer: Study Finds Drug Combination Extends Survival

In a significant breakthrough for ovarian cancer treatment, a large international study has found that adding a newer drug, relacorilant, to standard chemotherapy can help patients live longer — offering fresh hope in a disease known for limited treatment options.


The findings come from the phase 3 ROSELLA trial, a global study conducted across 14 countries and involving hundreds of patients with platinum-resistant ovarian cancer — a particularly aggressive form of the disease that no longer responds to standard platinum-based chemotherapy.

Researchers discovered that patients who received a combination of relacorilant and the chemotherapy drug nab-paclitaxel survived longer than those who received chemotherapy alone. On average, the combination extended overall survival by just over four months, with patients living about 16 months compared to nearly 12 months for those on standard treatment.

Importantly, nearly half of the patients receiving the combination therapy were still alive after 18 months, compared to just over a quarter in the chemotherapy-only group. The results were not only statistically significant but also considered clinically meaningful by researchers.

Relacorilant works in a unique way. It blocks the effects of cortisol — a stress hormone that can help cancer cells survive and resist treatment. By interfering with this process, the drug appears to make cancer cells more sensitive to chemotherapy, improving its effectiveness.

The study followed 381 patients who had already undergone multiple lines of treatment, highlighting how difficult it is to manage this stage of ovarian cancer. Many had previously received other advanced therapies, including targeted drugs and anti-angiogenic treatments.

Despite the encouraging survival benefits, the treatment was not without side effects. Patients receiving the combination experienced common chemotherapy-related issues such as low white blood cell counts, anemia, fatigue, and nausea. However, researchers noted that the overall safety profile was manageable and similar to chemotherapy alone when adjusted for treatment duration.

Experts say the findings are particularly important because they do not rely on specific biomarkers to identify which patients will benefit. This means the treatment could potentially be used more broadly, without the need for complex testing.

The results also suggest that the benefits of the combination extend beyond initial treatment, helping to delay disease progression even after patients move on to other therapies.

Ovarian cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, especially in cases where the disease becomes resistant to standard treatments. Current options are limited, and survival rates in such cases are often measured in months rather than years.

Researchers behind the study believe this new combination could soon become a standard treatment option for patients facing this difficult stage of the disease. At the same time, they emphasize the need for further research to determine how best to sequence this therapy alongside other emerging treatments.

The trial was funded by Corcept Therapeutics, the developer of relacorilant, and is still ongoing as scientists continue to explore its potential in other types of cancer.

For patients and doctors alike, the message is clear: while challenges remain, advances like this are beginning to shift the landscape of ovarian cancer care — offering more time, and more options, than ever before.
