New Study Finds Walking May Help Delay Alzheimer’s Disease

A recent study published in Nature Medicine has provided hope to millions of those concerned about Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at Mass General Brigham discovered that simply increasing daily walks, even by a tiny amount, can halt the onset of cognitive deterioration in those at higher risk of Alzheimer's. 

The researchers examined long-term data from the Harvard Ageing Brain Study, which tracked 296 persons aged 50 to 90 who were cognitively healthy at the start. Using pedometers to track daily exercise and PET scans to evaluate brain alterations, researchers discovered that persons who walked between 3,000 and 5,000 steps per day had a three-year delay in cognitive decline, while those who walked 5,000 to 7,500 steps per day had a seven-year delay. 

Sedentary participants, on the other hand, demonstrated a faster development of tau proteins, a critical cause of memory loss and dementia, as well as greater losses in thinking and daily functioning. 

"This sheds light on why some people who appear to be on an Alzheimer's trajectory don't decline as quickly as others," said Dr Jasmeer Chhatwal, senior author of the study. "Lifestyle factors appear to impact the earliest stages of Alzheimer's disease, suggesting that lifestyle changes may slow the emergence of cognitive symptoms if we act early." 

The study also discovered that reducing the accumulation of tau, which is involved in memory-related brain alterations, provided the most effect. According to co-author Dr Reisa Sperling, the findings demonstrate that "it's possible to build cognitive resilience even in people with early Alzheimer's-related changes in the brain." 

Dementia affects around 55 million individuals worldwide, and the number of cases is expected to increase significantly as populations age. Experts predict that more than 9 million individuals in India already have Alzheimer's or other kinds of dementia, with the amount expected to treble by 2050. 

According to health professionals, the latest findings support a simple message: prevention starts with tiny, consistent habits. Regular walking, enough sleep, and a well-balanced diet can all help to preserve cognitive function, especially if started early in life. 

Dr Wai-Ying Wendy Yau, the first author, stated, "Every step counts—and even small increases in daily activity can build over time to create sustained changes in habit and health."
