New Study Links Gut, Hormones, and Metabolism to Future Risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s remain among the most devastating medical mysteries of our time. Despite decades of research, doctors still struggle to predict who will develop these conditions and how to stop them. Now, a groundbreaking study published in Science Advances suggests that early clues may lie not only in the brain but in the gut, hormones, and metabolism — opening fresh avenues for prevention.


The large-scale study examined links between 155 health conditions and the later development of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Researchers found that a number of seemingly manageable conditions — ranging from diabetes and thyroid imbalances to digestive disorders and vitamin deficiencies — were associated with higher risks of developing neurodegeneration, sometimes more than a decade before symptoms appear.

A Shift Toward Prevention

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease are among the most common neurodegenerative disorders in the world. With an aging population, preventing and managing these conditions is becoming a public health priority,” said Dr. Lucy McCann, a medical doctor and nutritionist not involved in the study.

Scientists have long known that these diseases begin developing silently years before clinical symptoms emerge. This new research adds weight to the idea that spotting early health issues could help delay, or even prevent, the onset of neurodegeneration.

The Gut-Brain Axis Connection

One of the most intriguing findings centers on the so-called gut-brain axis — the constant communication between the digestive system and the brain. Disruptions in this system, researchers say, may influence the risk of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. Inflammation of the stomach or intestines, irritable bowel syndrome, and even certain bacterial infections were all flagged as potential risk factors.

The gut has its own nervous system — the second largest collection of neurons outside the brain — and disturbances here can affect mood, cognition, and long-term neurological health.

Hormones, Metabolism, and Nutrients

The study also found strong connections between hormonal and metabolic conditions and future risk. Severe diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and disorders affecting fats in the blood were all linked with a greater likelihood of neurodegeneration. Researchers are even exploring whether antidiabetic drugs could play a role in slowing or preventing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Meanwhile, nutrient deficiencies, particularly low levels of vitamin D, emerged as another red flag. Vitamin D deficiency is already common in older adults and has repeatedly been associated with dementia risk.

Timing Matters

What sets this study apart is its attention to timing. Researchers stratified risks based on whether conditions appeared 1–5 years, 5–10 years, or even 10–15 years before diagnosis. The data suggest that early and midlife health issues may significantly influence brain health decades later, providing a critical window for intervention.

Looking Ahead

The findings add urgency to efforts to detect and manage conditions like diabetes, thyroid disease, and gastrointestinal disorders early in life. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, experts hope that addressing these underlying health issues could reduce risks or delay disease onset.

As Dr. McCann noted, the new evidence underscores the importance of viewing the brain not in isolation, but as part of a complex network involving the gut, hormones, and metabolism. “If we can intervene earlier, we may be able to change the trajectory of these diseases,” she said.

With neurodegenerative conditions expected to rise sharply in aging populations worldwide, the message is clear: protecting brain health may start with looking well beyond the brain itself.
