Newborns 81 Times More Likely to Suffer Brain Bleeds if Vitamin K Shot Is Refused, Global Review Warns
Neurologists raise alarm as misinformation drives rising refusal rates of a life-saving birth supplement
A single decision made in the first hours of life can influence whether a newborn survives or suffers a catastrophic brain injury. A new comprehensive study discovered that neonates who do not receive a normal vitamin K injection at birth are 81 times more likely to develop vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB), a rare but serious illness.
The results were announced on February 26, 2026, and will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 78th Annual Meeting in Chicago in April. Researchers looked at 25 pieces of research from two decades of global data to assess refusal rates, medical outcomes, and linkages to broader healthcare hesitation.
Vitamin K isn't a vaccination. It's a nutritional supplement. Babies are naturally born with extremely low quantities of this vitamin, which the body requires to produce blood clots. Clotting is the process of stopping bleeding after a blood vessel is injured. Even mild internal bleeding might be fatal if vitamin K levels are low.
VKDB can cause an intracerebral haemorrhage, a kind of stroke caused by a ruptured blood artery within the brain. Simply said, it means bleeding into the brain tissue. This can lead to serious brain damage or death.
"This disease can result in an intracerebral haemorrhage, which is a type of stroke caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain. It can cause death or lifelong brain problems," the researchers stated.
According to the review, 63% of newborns with VKDB experienced brain bleeds. Approximately 40% were left with long-term neurological disorders such as seizures, cognitive impairment, and significant mobility issues. 14 per cent perished.
"Vitamin K at birth is safe and effective, and while refusal is still uncommon, with rates in the United States remaining below 1% in most hospitals, our review found that in recent years, there has been an increase in parents refusing this supplement for their newborns," said study author Kate Semidey, MD, of Florida International University in Miami.
"This trend is concerning because our review also found that babies who do not get the vitamin K injection are 81 times more likely to develop vitamin K deficiency bleeding."
In Minnesota, the refusal rate increased from 0.9% in 2015 to 1.6% in 2019. In portions of Canada, New Zealand, and Scotland, rates ranged from 1% to 3%. Some birthing centres worldwide reported refusal rates of more than 30%.
Researchers discovered a clear relationship between vitamin K refusal and overall rejection of neonatal healthcare. In the United States, parents who refused vitamin K were 90 per cent more likely to refuse both the hepatitis B vaccine and preventive eye medication. Similar tendencies emerged in Canada and New Zealand.
Parental concerns raised in the trials included fear of pain, preservatives, and exposure to incorrect web information.
"Our findings point to an urgent need for healthcare professionals to provide prenatal counselling to parents to ensure they understand that vitamin K can dramatically reduce preventable brain injury and its lifelong impact," according to Semidey.
The researchers acknowledged one limitation: the evaluation focused on previously published studies rather than tracking individual infants over time. However, the evidence constantly suggests that a vitamin K injection is a simple, safe, and effective preventative measure against avoidable disaster.
For physicians, the message is obvious. For parents, the decision hinges on understanding the potential risks. A single missed injection can leave a newborn vulnerable to a preventable and perhaps catastrophic brain bleed.
