Night-time Brightness Could Be Harming Millions, Finds Study

We think of our bedrooms as safe havens—places to rest, refuel, and recoup from the day's bustle. However, recent research reveals there may be a silent menace lurking beside our beds: the light that remains on as we sleep. 

A large-scale study published recently in JAMA Network Open discovered that exposure to ambient light during sleep is highly associated with an increased risk of acquiring cardiovascular disease. Scientists tracked over 89,000 adults for nearly a decade, gathering more than 13 million hours of personal light-exposure data using wrist-worn sensors – one of the most extensive studies of its type. 

Participants who slept in the brightest rooms had a 56% higher risk of heart failure than those who slept in near-complete darkness. The same group was also at a 47% higher risk of heart attack, a 32% higher risk of coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation, and a 28% higher risk of stroke. 

Experts believe these findings indicate a "risk factor hiding in plain sight." 

The cause is a disruption in the body's circadian rhythm, which regulates everything from blood pressure and metabolism to hormone balance. Artificial light at night disrupts this system, resulting in greater blood pressure, inflammation, glucose imbalance, and increased clot formation – all of which enhance cardiovascular risk over time. 

India currently has one of the world's highest rates of cardiovascular disease. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), cardiac disorders account for roughly 28% of all deaths in the country. The issue is exacerbated in urban places by the constant glow of streetlights and screens, as well as the high human density. 

From a public-health approach, this study shifts the emphasis away from costly cardiac treatments and towards inexpensive prevention. Managing chronic heart disease in India frequently entails long-term medication, surgery, and rehabilitation, which can cost families several lakhs of rupees over time. In contrast, preventive measures such as reducing lights or installing blackout curtains are simple and almost free. 

The researchers' message is clear: avoiding light at night may be an effective method for minimising the risk of cardiovascular disease. 

Widespread adoption of this habit could result in meaningful decreases in CVD incidence. In India, where healthcare spending on noncommunicable diseases continues to climb, this might result in enormous savings for both individuals and public institutions. 

According to an expert, "If even 10% of Indians improved their sleep environment, the long-term reduction in heart-related hospitalisations could be significant." It's a scenario where prevention genuinely beats cure. 

Unlike genetics or pollution, our nighttime light exposure is completely under our control. Small changes, such as turning off TVs, dimming hallway lighting, and covering LED chargers, can improve both sleep quality and heart health. 

As the science becomes clearer, the solution remains stunningly simple: a darker night may result in a healthier heart.
