No More Secret Snacks: Spy Glasses Track Your True Diet
We've all done it. When the doctor asks how much sugar or fat we consume, we conveniently forget about the additional biscuit with evening tea or the slice of cake after dinner. Occasionally it isn't even a falsehood; it's just bad memory. However, scientists believe that the days of lying about food may be over.
Researchers in the United Kingdom have begun a groundbreaking new study that employs smart camera glasses, blood tests, and urine samples to track what people actually eat and drink. The goal is simple but bold: to discover the truth about our everyday diets and address a long-standing issue in nutrition science: incorrect food data.
Aberystwyth University is leading the SODIAT-2 project, which is being carried out in collaboration with experts from the Universities of Reading, Cambridge, and Imperial College London. Researchers are enlisting 133 adults from across the UK to partake in a five-week study that meticulously tracks their eating patterns in authentic settings.
Instead of relying solely on meal diaries and lengthy questionnaires, participants will wear camera glasses that capture everything that crosses their lips. They will also offer tiny blood and urine samples at your home. These samples are examined for biological "markers"—chemical residues that indicate what the body received from meals and drinks. Even if a food is forgotten, the body leaves proof.
Why does this matter? According to academics, much of today's food data is insufficient since human memory is unreliable. People tend to neglect meals, undereat, or alter their eating habits when they become aware of monitoring. This insufficient data makes it more difficult to comprehend the true links between nutrition and diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain malignancies.
Dr Manfred Beckmann, lead main investigator at Aberystwyth University's Department of Life Sciences, stated that obtaining an accurate picture of diets has long been a big difficulty.
"Most studies have relied on participants remembering and recording the details of their meals, but memory can be unreliable, and hence the data is not always robust," he told me. Furthermore, individuals frequently alter their eating habits when they become aware of being under observation.
Researchers anticipate that by adopting a new approach, they would be able to provide stronger data to inform public health policy and diet.
"A much more accurate record of people's diets will help governments and policymakers assess the success of efforts to improve health and give better advice," according to Dr Beckmann.
Dr Amanda J Lloyd, also of Aberystwyth University, described why many tools are being used simultaneously.
She informed us that there is currently no single tool that can precisely capture every element of what we eat and drink. "Using urine and blood samples gives us objective data, while wearable cameras combined with AI software and simplified online tools also offer great potential."
The study team has already tested this technology in controlled laboratory settings. The current experiment will determine whether it works as well in real life, with participants eating normally in the comfort of their homes.
If successful, the findings could revolutionise the global approach to diet research. More precise data could result in more effective nutrition guidelines, illness prevention programmes, and clearer public health messages.
