PCOS Renamed as PMOS to Better Reflect Complex Health Condition
The condition long known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has officially been renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), in a move aimed at better reflecting the disorder’s complex and multisystem nature, according to an article published May 12 in The Lancet.
The renaming followed a global consensus process led by Helena J. Teede of Monash University and an international team of researchers, clinicians and patient advocacy groups.
Global Consensus Process
The review involved 56 academic, clinical and patient organizations worldwide. Researchers used global surveys, Delphi methods, workshops and implementation analyses to determine a name that would improve scientific accuracy while reducing stigma and confusion.
According to the researchers, there was strong support for adopting a more accurate medical term rather than simply preserving the familiar “PCOS” acronym.
Why the Name Changed
Experts said the old name focused too heavily on ovarian cysts, which are not present in all patients and do not fully represent the condition’s broader hormonal and metabolic effects.
The new term — polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) — was chosen to reflect the disorder’s impact on multiple body systems, including hormonal, metabolic and reproductive health.
Researchers intentionally removed the word “cysts” to improve medical accuracy and reduce misunderstanding surrounding the condition.
Focus on Patients and Reducing Stigma
“The agreed principles of the new name included patient benefit, scientific accuracy, ease of communication, avoidance of stigma, cultural appropriateness, and accompanying implementation,” Teede said in a statement.
“This change was driven with and for those affected by the condition and we are proud to have arrived at a new name that finally accurately reflects the complexity of the condition,” she added.
A Common Yet Misunderstood Disorder
PMOS, formerly known as PCOS, is one of the most common hormonal disorders affecting women of reproductive age. It is associated with irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, elevated androgen levels, insulin resistance and increased risks of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Researchers said the new terminology is expected to improve awareness, diagnosis and communication between patients and healthcare providers.
Several authors involved in the study disclosed ties to the pharmaceutical industry.
