Roche’s New Dengue Test Promises Faster, More Reliable Diagnosis Amid Global Surge
In a giant boost to global public health, Roche has achieved CE mark approval for its Elecsys Dengue Ag test, a fully automated immunoassay designed to identify acute dengue virus infection with high precision. The finding comes at a time when dengue fever, the world's most common mosquito-borne viral illness, is spreading faster than ever, necessitating an urgent need for a faster and more precise diagnosis.
Over 14.6 million cases and more than 12,000 dengue-related deaths were reported in 100 countries in 2024, the highest figures ever recorded. With half of the world's population now living in dengue-prone areas, early detection has become critical. Frequent outbreaks strain healthcare systems in India and parts of South Asia, particularly during the monsoon season when hospital rooms overflow with fever cases that can mimic other ailments like chikungunya or yellow fever.
The Elecsys Dengue Ag test detects the NS1 antigen, a protein found in the blood during the early stages of dengue infection, allowing doctors to confirm cases within days of symptoms appearing. The test is performed on Roche's automated cobas® e immunoassay analysers, which can process up to 300 tests per hour and provide findings in just 18 minutes. This combination of speed and scalability could be critical during outbreaks, as early detection helps prevent serious repercussions, including internal bleeding and organ failure.
Clinical trials reveal that the test has 94.9% sensitivity and 99.96% specificity, correctly detecting all four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4). Such dependability helps to boost the global fight against misdiagnosis by ensuring that patients receive appropriate care as soon as possible.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has listed the dengue virus NS1 antigen as one of its essential diagnostics, emphasising the importance of equitable testing access in infectious disease management. By incorporating dengue testing into its widely used platforms, Roche hopes to improve diagnostic efficiency and traceability while minimising manual errors in laboratories.
As climate change extends mosquito habitats and dengue spreads to new areas, breakthroughs like the Elecsys Dengue Ag test demonstrate how technology and fast detection can redefine epidemic response and protect millions of people globally.
