Safer Packaging Is Failing to Protect Children from Dangerous Cleaning Products

Every 35 minutes, a youngster is transported to the emergency department due to a household cleaning product. That sobering fact, gleaned from a 16-year study by experts at Nationwide Children's Hospital, raises an uncomfortable question: are houses actually growing safer, or just more deceptively so? 

The study, published in Paediatrics, examined data from 2007 to 2022 and discovered an estimated 240,800 emergency department visits in the United States for children aged five and under. On paper, there has been improvement. High-profile risks, such as detergent pods, prompted fast inducolourfulstry adjustments following 2012. Injury rates associated with these vividly coloured packets increased, peaked in 2015, and then began to fall. Manufacturers responded by using bitter-tasting coatings, opaque packaging, and child-resistant containers. 

"The post-2015 decline may be due to the implementation of safety measures, including child-resistant and opaque containers, and delayed-dissolving, bitter-tasting packet films," said Rebecca McAdams, MPH, the study's lead author. 

However, underneath this apparent achievement comes a more disturbing trend. Hospitalisation rates have quietly risen from 5.5% in previous years to 7% today. Simply put, fewer events are being prevented, but those that do occur are more severe. This is known as the "concentration paradox" among researchers. Cleaning solutions today are more potent—formulated to act faster and stronger—so even a minor exposure can cause major harm. 

Young children, particularly those aged one to two years, are the most vulnerable. "Young children explore their world by putting things in their mouth, but they can't read labels or recognise the potential danger of these products," explains McAdams. 

While detergent packets continue to account for 33% of injuries, a more subtle and persistent menace has largely gone overlooked. Spray bottles, a common household item, are responsible for 28% of all injuries—and their design has hardly changed in three decades. 

"Our previous analysis identified spray bottles as the primary source of household cleaning product-related injuries to young children," explained Lara McKenzie, PhD, the study's principal author. That tendency, she found, has not changed significantly over time. 

The issue is more than just access. It is a design. The trigger mechanism, designed for ease and efficiency, may be controlled by anyone, including a toddler. Child-resistant closures provide little protection once the bottle is in hand. The end consequence is a continual stream of injuries, the majority of which involve the eyes. Chemical burns, conjunctivitis, and skin reactions are common results. 

More disturbing is what experts refer to as the "secondary victim" effect. Almost one in every four spray-related injuries occurs when another person, usually a sibling or even a parent, accidently sprays the child. It is a scenario that safety regulations have generally failed to predict. 

Bleach and detergents are still the most prevalent products involved. Bleach, which is typically stored in spray bottles, has consistently high injury rates over time. Experts believe the problem is hidden in plain sight. While innovation addressed the visual dilemma of detergent pods, ordinary distribution mechanisms such as spray bottles have remained virtually unchanged throughout time. 

Years of meticulous research have led to the discoveries. The researchers used the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a major database in the United States that tracks consumer product-related injuries. Line by line, case by case, a pattern emerged—not of huge surges, but of persistent, constant hazards. 

The message conveys urgency rather than panic. Parents and carers are encouraged to keep cleaning chemicals out of reach, in their original containers, and to act swiftly if exposed. However, accountability is not limited to the home. 

If a product's design makes it so easy to cause harm, the debate changes from behaviour to accountability. According to the study, safety must extend beyond packaging. It must include how these things are used in real life. 

Because the risk in modern houses is no longer limited to what's inside the bottle. It's how easy it is to spray.
