Smart Ageing Tech is Making Seniors Feel Watched, Not Cared For: Report
As countries like Australia and India face a rapid rise in ageing populations, a wave of “smart” devices is quietly entering homes, promising safer and more independent lives for older people. But a new study suggests that behind this shiny promise lies an uncomfortable truth—many seniors feel less cared for and more watched.
The research, published in the journal Digital Health and led by Flinders University, examines the use of home sensors, wearable trackers and artificial intelligence tools in elder care. These systems can spot falls, remind people to take their medicine, or keep track of daily routines. Sounds ideal on paper. But the truth is, it’s not that simple.
“The conversation about ageing and technology needs to move beyond the idea that new devices automatically lead to better care,” says lead author Dr Claire Gough from Flinders’ Caring Futures Institute.
In cultures that deeply value caring for elders, many families perceive the use of machines as a practical solution. A sensor can alert if someone falls. A smartwatch can monitor heart rate. A virtual assistant can remind someone to eat. But as Dr Gough points out, “Technology is often presented as a quick fix for the challenges of ageing, but it’s never just about the device. It’s about people, relationships, values and the environments older people live in.”
That human layer is where things begin to crack.
In simple terms, these devices collect data—small bits of information about daily life. When a person wakes up, see how often they move, even when they go to the bathroom. While this can improve safety, it can also feel intrusive. Many older people in the study described a sense of being constantly observed, as if their own home had turned into a quiet monitoring system.
“One of the biggest barriers is that many technologies are developed without fully understanding the lived experience of ageing,” says Dr Gough. “Older people tell us they worry about privacy, loss of control and being constantly watched in their own homes, and if technology feels intrusive or makes someone feel less respected, it’s unlikely to be welcomed, no matter how advanced it is.”
This concern is not just emotional—it affects real-world adoption. Despite heavy promotion, many of these devices are simply not being used. Some are too complex. Others do not fit into daily routines. Care workers, too, often hesitate. If a system adds extra steps or raises ethical discomfort, it quietly gets ignored, which can lead to a lack of engagement from care workers and ultimately affect the quality of care provided.
The study also points to a larger change. Homes are no longer just physical spaces but are in many ways digital environments that gather and share information. Seriously? That is a question. Who owns this data? Who sees it? And what effect does that have on how it feels to live in your own home?
“We need to ask hard questions such as, Who decides what data is collected? Who can see it? And how is it used? And how does that affect someone’s sense of autonomy and comfort in their home?” Dr Gough adds.
Experts say the biggest mistake is simple—nobody asked the elderly enough.
Designers often build these systems in labs, testing performance and accuracy. But real life is messy. An 80-year-old may not want a device that tracks every movement. They may value dignity over digital safety. This gap between design and reality is what makes many high-tech solutions fail.
The study strongly recommends “co-design”—a process where older people are involved from the very beginning. “Co-design isn’t a nice extra; it’s fundamental to making sure technology supports older people rather than making decisions for them,” says Dr Gough.
Another key finding is the role of human carers. Nurses and family members act as the bridge between technology and the elderly. When used correctly, technology can reduce routine tasks and allow carers to spend more meaningful time with patients. But if it replaces human interaction, it risks increasing loneliness.
“Technology should never take the place of human connection,” Dr Gough stresses. “When it’s done well, it actually supports care workers to spend more meaningful time with the people they care for.”
The message is clear. Ageing is not merely a technical issue that gadgets can resolve. It is a deeply human experience, shaped by dignity, choice, and relationships. If technology forgets that, even the smartest device will fail.
