Soft Foods, Weak Jaws: How Fast Food Is Quietly Reshaping Young Faces, Warn Experts
Love pizza, burgers, and fries? Experts warn that your favorite fast foods might be doing more than just expanding your waistline — they could actually be weakening your jawline.
At the inauguration of Clove Dental’s first Orthodontic Centre of Excellence in Gurugram, dental specialists raised an unusual but serious concern — modern diets filled with soft, easy-to-chew foods are changing the way our jaws develop.
“When we were young, we chewed sugarcane, guavas, and other tough foods that naturally strengthened our jawline,” said Lt Gen Dr. Vimal Arora, Chief Clinical Officer at Clove Dental.
“Today’s generation is hooked on fast food that barely needs chewing, and it’s showing. We’re seeing smaller, weaker jawlines, which not only affect facial appearance but also oral health.”
A poor jawline, Dr. Arora explained, can cause teeth to overlap or grow improperly — a condition that often requires orthodontic correction. “It’s not just about looks. A misaligned jaw can make it harder to chew properly and may even affect speech in some cases,” he added.
Mr Amarinder Singh, Founder and CEO of Clove Dental, said the new Gurugram centre aims to bring high-end, specialized orthodontic care to the community. “Treatments for jaw and tooth alignment can last anywhere from eight to twenty-four months,” he noted. “At our new facility, orthodontists will be available round the clock, and patients will benefit from state-of-the-art digital scanning technology that shows how their smile will look even before treatment begins.”
The centre currently manages over 28,000 orthodontic cases nationwide and uses advanced scanning systems developed by an American company to predict treatment stages and outcomes with remarkable precision.
Dr. Arora added, “This is not just about fixing crooked teeth — it’s about addressing lifestyle changes that are quietly altering our facial structure. The combination of technology and awareness can help prevent long-term oral health issues.”
As Clove Dental takes orthodontic care to the next level, the message from experts is clear: for a stronger jaw and a healthier smile, it might be time to trade that burger for a bite of sugarcane.
