Study Finds Children May Lose Kidney Function Faster Than Adults

A new study has questioned long-held beliefs about kidney illness, demonstrating that children and young people with certain glomerular diseases may experience faster deterioration in kidney function than older patients. The findings, presented at the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week 2025 in San Diego, shed new insight on how age is not always a protective factor when it comes to chronic kidney disease. 

The study uses data from CureGN, one of the world's largest ongoing investigations of individuals with primary glomerular disorders, which include minimal change disease (MCD), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), membranous nephropathy (MN), and IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Traditionally, clinicians assumed that these illnesses proceed more slowly in younger patients. However, the new analysis points to a different reality. 

When researchers looked at adults and children diagnosed with kidney issues through biopsy, they found that younger patients were often just as likely or even more likely to reach serious problems like kidney failure, a 40% drop in kidney function (eGFR), and even death. Children with MCD had the greatest eGFR reductions compared to adult patients. Those aged 13-17 with MN and 18-44 with FSGS or IgA nephropathy experienced rapid kidney deterioration within their respective disease groups. 

Patients with IgA nephropathy aged 6-12, 13-17, and 45-64 had decreased risks compared to those aged 18-44, suggesting that age-related risk may change by kidney disease type. "These findings suggest that young patients who receive a kidney biopsy diagnosis of primary glomerular disease face a significant risk of developing kidney failure and requiring dialysis or a transplant in their lifetime," said Margaret Helmuth, principal author from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbour. 

Dr Chia-shi Wang of Emory University, a co-author, noted, "Our research highlights the importance of including children in clinical trials to mitigate against the adverse outcomes they face." 

According to experts, the findings could change how medics perceive the progression of kidney disease in younger populations. Early detection, close monitoring, and individualised treatment methods may become even more important for preventing irreparable kidney damage. The report also advocates for long-term research into how early-onset renal illness affects overall health and life expectancy. 

For families and healthcare providers, the message is clear: young people with kidney disease require more attention, research, and preventative treatment than ever before.
