Study Warns Traffic Pollution May Be “Aging” Men’s Kidneys Up to 4 Times Faster
For years, people living in crowded cities believed polluted air mainly attacked the lungs. The cough after a long bike ride through traffic, the burning eyes during winter smog, the tight chest after a dusty commute — these became accepted parts of urban life. But scientists are now warning that the real damage may be happening much deeper inside the body, silently scarring the kidneys long before symptoms appear.
A major 10-year study from Brazil has found that tiny pollution particles released mainly from vehicle fuel combustion may sharply increase the risk of serious kidney disease, particularly among men. The findings, supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and published in the journal Scientific Reports, are raising fresh concerns for millions of daily commuters exposed to heavy traffic pollution in cities across the world, including India.
Researchers studied hospitalisation risks linked to fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, in São Paulo between 2011 and 2021. These microscopic particles are so small — about 30 times thinner than a human hair — that they can slip through the lungs, enter the bloodstream and travel to vital organs.
Scientists described them almost like invisible “ghost dust” from exhaust smoke.
What they discovered alarmed them.
Men across different age groups faced the highest risk of hospitalisation for chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury and glomerulopathies, conditions that damage the tiny filtering units inside the kidneys responsible for cleaning the blood. In some cases, the risk of chronic kidney disease rose by up to four times.
Even more disturbing, researchers found that exposure to pollution levels considered acceptable by the World Health Organization (WHO) still increased the risk of kidney injury among men.
“Exposure of São Paulo residents to this material reached 65 ?g/m³, more than four times the maximum tolerable level according to the WHO. However, even concentrations within the limit showed a link to hospitalisations for kidney diseases,” said Iara da Silva, first author of the study and a researcher linked to the Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics, and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of São Paulo (IAG-USP) and the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR).
The findings are especially worrying for working-age men between 19 and 50 years old — the very group spending long hours riding bikes, driving cars, operating delivery vehicles or standing in traffic-clogged streets every day.
Researchers believe these particles may trigger what they call “premature kidney ageing”, meaning the kidneys begin behaving like much older organs. A healthy 30-year-old organ may slowly start functioning like that of someone decades older.
The science behind it is grim but simple.
“The hypothesis is that particulate matter can enter the bloodstream and deposit in kidney tissue, where it's recognised by the immune system as a foreign body,” explained Lucia Andrade, professor at the USP Medical School and coordinator of the project “Air Pollution Is the Driver of Premature Kidney Aging”, supported by FAPESP and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
According to Andrade, the body then releases inflammatory chemicals that cause fibrosis — internal scarring — and senescence, or accelerated ageing of kidney tissue.
In earlier laboratory experiments, Andrade’s team exposed one group of mice to polluted São Paulo air while another group breathed filtered air. The polluted-air animals developed more kidney inflammation, poorer blood filtration, increased cell death pathways known as necroptosis and signs of long-term organ damage.
The implications stretch far beyond science labs.
Severe kidney disease often pushes families toward expensive dialysis treatments that filter blood outside the body several times a week. In advanced cases, patients may need transplants, but waiting lists remain painfully long in many countries.
For readers sitting in Delhi traffic or breathing roadside smoke during daily commutes, the study carries an uncomfortable message: polluted air may not just be choking the lungs. It may quietly be damaging the body’s blood filters every single day.
Researchers say existing pollution-control policies are still not enough.
“We really need a new development model that doesn't rely on burning fossil fuels,” Silva said, warning that cleaner air may ultimately become as important for kidney health as it is for breathing itself.
