Swadeshi Diwali Shines Bright in Seemapuri: Thousands of Earthen Lamps Spread Light, Health, and Hope

Campaign promotes eco-friendly celebrations and sustainable living inspired by the ‘Vocal for Local’ vision

This Diwali, the slum clusters of Seemapuri glowed with a different kind of light — one that symbolized health, sustainability, and community spirit. In a heartening gesture, thousands of earthen lamps (mitti ke diye) were distributed among underprivileged families as part of an awareness drive promoting eco-friendly and Swadeshi celebrations.

Along with the lamps, children received toys and sweets, infusing the festive season with warmth and compassion.

The campaign, themed “Adopt Swadeshi, Celebrate an Eco-Friendly Diwali,” echoes the national call for self-reliance and environmental responsibility.

The initiative aims to encourage citizens to celebrate Diwali in a way that nurtures both cultural heritage and public health.

“Lighting earthen diyas not only brightens our homes but also our hearts. It keeps us connected to our soil and helps reduce the harmful pollution caused by synthetic lights and firecrackers,” said local BJP leader Mr Deepak Sagar.

Promoting Clean Air and Mental Well-being  The campaign emphasized that a pollution-free Diwali contributes to better respiratory health — especially crucial for children, the elderly, and those with asthma or chronic lung conditions. Reducing firecracker use can significantly lower toxic emissions, minimizing post-festival smog and breathing difficulties.

“This Diwali should be about harmony and health. Instead of fireworks, let’s fill our homes with the glow of diyas and the joy of togetherness,” said another BJP leader Mr Shanki Khurana.

Medical experts have often highlighted that festivals celebrated with moderation and mindfulness help reduce stress, strengthen community bonds, and enhance emotional well-being — values deeply rooted in India’s cultural and spiritual traditions.

Celebrating Tradition with a Modern Message  The event blended Sanatan Dharma’s message of light over darkness with a modern environmental consciousness.

Participants were urged to support local potters, use biodegradable decorations, and maintain cleanliness in their neighborhoods.

“Adopting Swadeshi is not only about economics — it’s about protecting our planet and honoring our traditions,” the volunteers emphasized.

The campaign concluded with a reminder that every small act — from choosing an earthen diya over plastic decor to avoiding chemical-based firecrackers — contributes to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable India.  > “Diwali teaches unity, compassion, and self-reliance. Let us make this festival a step towards a pollution-free future and a healthier nation,” the organizers said.     ---
