The Simple Shake That Could Reduce Dementia Care Dependency

A new study from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm reveals that recovering daily independence may not necessitate a new medicine but rather a simple program of protein drinks and standing exercises. For millions dealing with dementia, the most profound loss is not often memory. It is the calm moment when a mother can no longer button her blouse or a father requires assistance to stand at the washbasin.

The study, published in Alzheimer's and Dementia, looked into whether physical exercise paired with increased dietary protein could lessen nursing home care dependency in older persons. 

What was studied and where? 

The 12-week programme involved 102 people from eight nursing homes in the Stockholm area. Participants in the intervention group were asked to do standing exercises several times per day and drink one to two protein-rich nutritional drinks. 

Researchers tracked how much assistance residents needed with "activities of daily living" – a clinical term that refers to simple chores like showering, dressing, eating, and getting from bed to chair. 

Malnutrition, physical weakness, and frailty are common issues for older individuals living in special housing. Frailty is defined as a lack of strength and resilience, which makes even simple chores laborious. These variables influence both health and dignity. 

What Did the Study Find? 

When researchers studied all inhabitants together, they discovered no discernible difference. However, when the results were divided by ward type, a distinct trend emerged. 

In dementia units, participants who followed the "Stand-Up and Sip" practice improved enough to need less support from staff than those who did not get the intervention. 

After three months, patients weren't just stronger. Many people could do more of their morning activities themselves. 

"This is about more than muscle mass," the study's narrative implies. "This is about a grandma having the strength to stand at the washbasin and wash her own face, or a grandfather having the coordination to pull on his own jacket. It's a huge win for quality of life." 

Anders Wimo, a researcher at Karolinska Institutet's Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences, and Society, suggested one possible explanation. 

“One possible explanation is that people in dementia units had better physical conditions for improving their functional ability and were therefore able to do more things themselves after the intervention,” says Anders Wimo. 

Why Does Protein Matter? 

Protein is needed for muscle maintenance. Poor appetite and trouble eating in elderly persons, particularly those with dementia, can cause muscle loss. Even standing becomes difficult when muscles are weak. 

The previous OPEN trial showed gains in muscle mass and nutritional health. This new study investigated if their physical advantages translated into less care time. 

However, researchers recommend caution. The analysis was secondary, which means that care time was not the main focus of the original trial. 

“More studies are needed where care time is a primary outcome and where organisational factors, such as staffing levels and work routines, are closely monitored,” says Anders Wimo. 

The Bigger Picture 

While further research is needed, the findings indicate that planned exercise and a good diet may help restore a level of independence in dementia care settings. 

For families, that might mean more than just longer life; it could also mean reclaiming mornings, one small, firm stand at a time.
