Vitamin D May Lower Long COVID Risk, Study Finds—But Questions Remain
A new study offers a glimmer of hope in the fight against Long COVID, suggesting that a simple vitamin supplement could help reduce the risk of developing the condition—though it’s far from a complete solution.
According to the World Health Organization, about six in every 100 people who contract COVID-19 go on to develop long COVID, a condition where symptoms persist for months—or even years—after the initial infection.
These symptoms can range from constant fatigue and breathing problems to “brain fog,” sleep disturbances, joint pain, and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Despite its widespread impact, there is still no definitive cure, and treatment mainly focuses on managing symptoms.
Now, research published in The Journal of Nutrition points to a potential preventive role for vitamin D. The study found that while vitamin D supplements do not reduce the severity of COVID-19 itself, they may lower the chances of developing long COVID afterward.
The research involved over 1,700 adults from the United States and Mongolia who had recently tested positive for COVID-19, along with members of their households. Participants were given either a daily vitamin D3 supplement or a placebo for four weeks, starting shortly after diagnosis.
At the end of the study period, researchers observed a modest but notable difference. Around 21% of those taking vitamin D reported lingering symptoms after eight weeks, compared to 25% in the placebo group—suggesting a lower risk among those who took the supplement.
Experts believe this could be linked to vitamin D’s role in supporting the immune system and reducing inflammation, both of which are thought to play a part in long COVID. JoAnn Manson, a senior author of the study, noted that the findings were encouraging, especially given the short duration of the treatment.
However, the study also made it clear that vitamin D is not a cure-all. It showed no significant impact on how severe COVID-19 symptoms were during the initial infection. Hospital visits, recovery rates, and overall illness severity remained similar between those taking vitamin D and those on placebo.
The findings highlight an important distinction: vitamin D may help with long-term complications, but not with the immediate illness.
Doctors say this could be because vitamin D works by calming inflammation and supporting recovery after infection, rather than directly fighting the virus itself. Still, they caution that more research is needed before firm conclusions can be drawn.
Experts not involved in the study also stress that the role of vitamin D in overall health remains complex. While it is known to influence immune function, scientists are still trying to fully understand how and when it provides the most benefit.
For now, the takeaway is one of cautious optimism. Long COVID continues to affect millions worldwide, often disrupting daily life for extended periods. While lifestyle factors like healthy diet, exercise, good sleep, and avoiding smoking are already known to help reduce risk, vitamin D may now be added to the list of potential supportive measures.
Researchers are planning further trials to better understand whether higher doses or longer use of vitamin D could play a stronger role—not just in prevention, but possibly in treatment as well.
Until then, experts say maintaining overall health and immunity remains the best defence, as science continues to search for clearer answers to one of the pandemic’s most persistent challenges.
