Warmth and Relief at GTB Hospital & IHBAS: New Shelter Homes Offer Comfort to Patients, Attendants — and Anyone in Need

In a heartwarming move just as Delhi’s winter chill begins to bite, new shelter homes have sprung up outside Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital and the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) — offering tired families a warm place to rest, instead of spending long hours shivering in queues.

The shelter homes have been set up by the government authorities.

Every day, hundreds of patients and attendants arrive at these hospitals before sunrise, often waiting through the night to secure appointments or access emergency care. Until now, many had no option but to stand or sleep outdoors. But things are changing.

Around seven to eight shelter homes have been set up right at the hospital entrances, each equipped with 20 beds, clean drinking water and washroom facilities. For many, this simple arrangement means the difference between battling the harsh cold or resting with dignity.

And the best part? These shelters aren’t just for hospital visitors.

Anyone who needs a warm place to stay — even those without a home — can walk in and rest. No questions asked.

Families waiting for treatment say the shelters have already made a huge difference. Instead of huddling on pavements or spending the night in the open, they now have a safe, covered space to sleep, especially crucial as temperatures begin to drop sharply.

Caretakers and hospital staff also welcome the move, calling it “long overdue help” for people who often travel from far-flung areas and arrive with nowhere to rest.

As Delhi gears up for peak winter, these shelters stand as small but powerful symbols of care — reminding everyone that sometimes, warmth comes not just from blankets, but from thoughtful, timely action.
