A major controversy has erupted at Rajasthan’s Mathura Das Mathur Hospital in Jodhpur after allegations surfaced that doctors operated on the wrong leg of a patient — a mistake that has now triggered multiple investigations and disciplinary action.

Speaking on the incident, Hospital Superintendent Vikas Rajpurohit said the matter first came to light through a newspaper report. Once the report surfaced, the hospital administration immediately stepped in and ordered an inquiry.

According to Rajpurohit, the surgery was intended for one leg, but doctors allegedly performed the procedure on the other. “As soon as the report appeared in the newspaper, we constituted a committee to investigate the matter,” he said.

Senior doctors were tasked with examining the case, and based on their findings, notices were issued to those concerned. The hospital administration has also initiated action against responsible officials while a higher-level committee has now been formed for a deeper probe.

Rajpurohit admitted that standard medical protocols and safety checklists are designed specifically to prevent such incidents, but acknowledged that “human error” can sometimes occur — something he described as completely unacceptable in healthcare.

Interestingly, the initial inquiry by doctors reportedly did not explicitly confirm that the wrong leg had been operated on. Instead, the panel noted that mandatory SOPs and safety checklists were not properly followed during the procedure.

The hospital administration says the newly formed high-level committee will now examine every aspect of the case to determine accountability and ensure that no procedural lapses are overlooked.

The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over patient safety and medical negligence in government hospitals, with many questioning how such a serious error could occur despite established safeguards.
