NPPA seeks price data from knee implant companies

 BS RAWAT

In an office memorandum, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has directed manufacturers and importers of knee replacement systems to furnish price data of orthopedic knee implants to the authority.

The pricing regulator has requested the companies to furnish the data, as per the format, to NPPA latest by July 26, 2020. The excel version of data is to be emailed to medicaldevices-nppa@gov.in.

In August last year, DTMT reported that the Government had extended the ceiling price of orthopedic knee implants and said that it will be monitored to ensure that the orthopedic knee implants cost does not increase beyond 10% in a given year.

After the industry requested for a 20% increase in the price of knee implants, the government has decided to further monitor the price increase of knee implants as per para 20 of the DPCO-2013 that restricts price increase beyond 10% in a given year.

The NPPA notified the ceiling price of orthopedic knee implants on August 16, 2017, by invoking extraordinary powers, in public interest, under Para 19 of Drugs Prices Control Order (DPCO) 2013, for a period of one year.
