Rai blames stubble burning for rise in air pollution

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai has blamed stubble burning for rising levels of air pollution in the national capital.

 

While speaking to the media on November 8, 2021, Rai said that a total 400 places reported stubble burning on November 7, 2021.

He stressed that stubble burning needs to be restricted. Stubble burning is the primary reason for air pollution in Delhi, he added.

It may be noted that farmers in nearby states of Delhi burn stubble to vacate their fields. Stubble burning is a decade-old tradition in UP, Haryana and Punjab but for years it has contributed to the rise in air pollution in Delhi. Moreover, pollution caused by vehicles and also are major sources of air pollution.  

It is understood that the poor air quality is dangerous to lung health and other existing ailments.

Doctors have advised to use N95 masks, which is one of the protective measures from air pollution. They added that elders, children and vulnerable group of people should only come out from their homes when there is urgent need.

They said that one should avoid morning walk and running. They pointed out that public transport should encouraged instead of individual transport.
