IMA office bearers releasing the health manifesto in New Delhi

IMA urges political parties to give priority to healthcare

BS RAWAT
NEW DELHI:
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has released its health manifesto ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and urged all political parties to give priority to the health sector.

The health manifesto contains various recommendations to improve public health, streamline medical education, change policy directions and encourage medical research.

The IMA has pointed out that there is inadequate funding in the healthcare sector and the out of pocket expenditure on healthcare by patients is one of the highest for India. Every year over 3.3 per cent of patients and their families are pushed below the poverty line due to this expenditure.
The top medical body will soon launch a nationwide 'Health First' campaign to propagate the health manifesto among the Lok Sabha candidates, political parties and the public.

The state units of IMA will carry out public meetings and conferences in which the candidates will also be invited.

The IMA has also told the political parties that the preventive and primary care should be given top priority. Healthcare centres have to be reconceived and they have to be manned by MBBS doctors."

The IMA says that MBBS graduates are ready to work in rural areas and the IMA can facilitate availability of manpower to the wellness centres. There should be recruitment boards to recruit MBBS doctors for primary care, the doctors' body said.
