The newly renamed Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences was inaugurated by Union Health Minister on August 16, 2019, the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

With this, Delhi now has 10 medical colleges offering a total of 1,250 seats for the MBBS course.

On the occasion, the health minister also laid the foundation stone of a 550 bed Super Speciality Block and New doctors’ Hostel.The super speciality block will have 20 operation theaters with kidney transplant, urology, cancer surgery, cardiology and neurology facilities.

The medical institute attached with Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, New Delhi, till now went by the name of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

The first batch of the 2019 MBBS session at the institute commenced on August 1, 2019, under Indraprastha University, Delhi.

The hospital is already upgraded to 1500 beds and is on the way to accommodate 3000 plus beds by 2021. A new hostel facility with 824 dwelling units is under completion and a new site is identified for separate male and female undergraduate hostel with 300 additional dwelling accommodations.
