The Delhi Government has turned a Senior Secondary School in Kalyanpuri area into a shelter home to house migrant workers who have been displaced and are stranded midway to their far away homes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar due to lockdown to contain spread of coronavirus.

All the classrooms of the school have been converted into bedrooms equipped with folding beds, fans and mats. All those staying in the rooms have been directed to follow protocol of maintaining self hygiene.

It may be noted that thousands of people had gathered in Delhi’s Anand Vihar Bus Terminal to board buses to their far away homes in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The government deployed home guards and buses of the Delhi Transport Corporation to bring people stranded near Anand Vihar to the school so that they can stay with comfort.

Mr Himanshu, a senior official of Kalayanpuri Government School, said: "We have ensured that these people stay with comfort."

“We have ensured good and hygienic food for these people. We are also planning to arrange tea twice a day for them. We are taking precautions so that none of them falls ill in school. We have arranged an ambulance. We are arranging mosquito kits. They have been provided masks. We have provided separate rooms for families including ladies, while people from different areas have been provided different rooms,” said Himanshu.

He further said that the migrants are not adhering to the rules of wearing masks and maintaining hygiene. "They are not cooperating with us," he added. However, migrants looked anxious about their safety and security. Many of them are unaware of the corona virus.
