A doctor and his assistant were held in Delhi’s Sunlight Colony for conducting ultrasound tests to disclose the sex of the fetus. Determination of the sex of the fetus is an offense in Delhi.

Dr Manoj Krishan Ahuja, 70, was working as a radiologist at Jeewan Hospital, Jeewan Nagar, in Sunlight Colony. His aide, Kavita, was the agent who used to take money from the patients to determine the sex of the fetus.

Both the doctor and the agent were held in a raid conducted jointly by officers of the Delhi State PNDT Cell and PNDT team of Rohtak, Haryana, which informed about the illegal prenatal tests being conducted at this centre.

A decoy patient was sent to the hospital who gave Rs 30,000 to Kavita for getting the ultrasound done from this hospital and for disclosing sex of the fetus.

“The agent, Kavita, got the name of the husband of the decoy patient entered in the medical records instead of the patient's name. Dr Ahuja conducted the ultrasound and disclosed the sex of the child to be female. The test was done without any deposit of ID of the patient. The patient also did not fill any form required under provisions of PCPNDT Act,” states a Delhi government press release.

The team caught Dr Ahuja and Kavita just after they revealed the sex of the fetus. The team also recovered Rs 12000 of pre noted currency notes from Dr Ahuja and Rs 18000 of pre noted currency notes from agent Kavita.

Rs 22 lakh and 76000 US dollars were also recovered from Dr Ahuja. The team also recovered demonetized Indian currency worth of Rs 18000 from Dr Ahuja. All three ultrasound machines of the hospital have been sealed and FIRs have been registered by the Delhi Police under relevant provisions and acts.
