In yet another case of an attack on a doctor, Dr Dipankar Debnath, JR in the department of gynecology, was attacked by relatives of a pregnant woman who died of cardiac arrest in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Agartala, Tripura.

West Bengal Doctors Association issued a statement supporting Dr Debnath saying that Dr Debnath was mercilessly dragged for about a kilometer and severely beaten by a mob after the death of the patient.

It is stated that Gobinda Das, 25, a resident of Lankamura area of West Agartala, had admitted his wife Mampi Das, 20, in late stage of pregnancy to the maternity ward of IGMH. Unfortunately, the patient died due to cardiac arrest.

Gobinda and his friends created a commotion in the hospital, targeting junior doctor Dr Debnath who was in no way responsible for the patient’s death. Even though the security guards drove the irate Gobinda and his friends away, his friends waited outside the hospital gates.

As Dr Debnath was returning from his night duty, Gobinda’s  friends held Dr Debanth and dragged him to the City Center where the doctor was severely beaten up and left sprawled on the road.

An FIR was registered against Gobinda’s five friends and they were arrested. The West Bengal Doctors Association has demanded from the state government of Tripura and the Central government to ensure the safety of all healthcare professionals at workplace.
