26,000 food samples found adulterated/ misbranded

Mr Rameswar Teli, India's Minister of State for Food Processing Industry, has informed Rajya Sabha that out of the 94,288 food samples lifted for testing across the country, a whopping 26,077 have been found to be adulterated or misbranded in the year 2018-19.
Mr Teli further said that a total of 32.8 crore rupees were raised as penalties in the year. He said that 475 convictions have been made in food adulteration cases in the year.
The minister said that Commissioners of Food Safety of States and union territories regularly conduct inspections, surveillance and enforcement drives.
