Melatonin

Melatonin

It is a hormone produced in the pineal gland. There is a diurnal rhythm of melatonin synthesis and secretion, stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light. When administered exogenously, its actions are prototypic of a new class of drugs termed chronobiotics.

Indications

Management of disturbed biorhythms. It postpones ageing and boosts immune function.


Dosage

One tab once at bed time. Can be titrated in a range of 1-5 mg once at bed time.


Contra-Indications

Persons taking steroids. Allergies, mental illness, lymphomas, auto-immune disease, leukemias.


Special Precautions

Liver disease, history of neurological disorders, concurrent b-blocking agents. Paediatrics: Contraindicated. Pregnancy: Safety not established Lactation: Not safe.


Side Effects

Drowsiness, fatigue, headache, confusion and pruritus.
