Opipramol

Opipramol is an iminostilbene derivative, belonging to dibenzazepine group used for depression. Opipramol is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). It is primarily used for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Opipramol is an antidepressant that works by affecting the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as serotonin and norepinephrine. It is chemically distinct from other tricyclic antidepressants and is sometimes classified as an atypical antidepressant.

Indications

Opipramol is indicated for the treatment of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It is not typically used for the treatment of major depressive disorder.


Dosage

-The dosage of Opipramol can vary based on individual patient needs. Typically, the starting dose is low and may be gradually increased under medical supervision. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and instructions provided by the healthcare professional. -Oral; 50-300mg daily


Contra-Indications

-Opipramol is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug. It should also be avoided in patients with a history of seizures or other conditions that may be exacerbated by the anticholinergic effects of the medication. -Hypersensitivity to opipramol dihydrochloride, tricyclic antidepressants or to any of the excipients, acute alcohol, hypnotic, analgesic and psychotropic intoxication, acute urinary retention, acute delirium, untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy with residual urine, paralytic ileus, pre-existing higher-degree AV block or diffuse supraventricular or ventricular conduction disorders,combination with monoaminoxidase (MAO) inhibitor.


Special Precautions

-Special precautions should be taken in elderly patients, those with a history of cardiac issues, and individuals with liver or kidney impairment. Opipramol may cause drowsiness, so caution is advised when operating machinery or engaging in activities that require alertness. -Pregnancy:- category C Lactation:-Excreted in breast milk, should not be used Paediatrics:- data not sufficient Elderly:- data not sufficient


Side Effects

-Common side effects of Opipramol may include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, and weight gain. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, it is important to inform a healthcare professional promptly. -Dry mouth, stuffy nose, fatigue, drowsiness, dizziness, increased sweating, blurred vision, speech impairment, tremors, heart rhythm disturbances, palpitations, , liver dysfunction, constipation, urinary retention, decreased libido, urticaria.


Drug Interactions

-Opipramol may interact with other medications, such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), antihistamines, and certain anticholinergic drugs. It is crucial to inform the prescribing healthcare professional of all medications being taken to avoid potential interactions. - Antiparkinsonism and phonothiazine drugs, SSRIs, MAO inhibitors, CNS depressants.
