ALBUTEROL

ALBUTEROL

Albuterol, also known as salbutamol, is a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) medication commonly used as a bronchodilator. It helps relax the muscles in the airways and increases airflow to the lungs, making it easier to breathe. It is available in various forms, including inhalers, nebulizers, and oral tablets. It is a potent bronchodilator and relieves cough by increasing the surface velocity of airflow during cough.

Indications

-Albuterol is primarily used to treat and manage bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). -It can also be used to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.

Dosage

-The dosage of albuterol varies depending on the form of the medication (inhaler, nebulizer, oral tablet) and the patient's age and medical condition. -Inhalers: Typically, one to two puffs every 4-6 hours as needed for symptom relief. -Nebulizers: Doses vary, but common prescriptions are 2.5 mg to 5 mg every 4-6 hours as needed. -Always follow the healthcare provider's instructions and the medication label for proper dosage.

Contra-Indications

Heart problems, hypersensitivity to albuterol.

Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or seizures. -Excessive use of albuterol can lead to paradoxical bronchospasm, where the airways constrict rather than open. -Albuterol may cause a temporary decrease in serum potassium levels. -Caution is advised in pregnant or breastfeeding women; consult a healthcare provider.
