Amodiaquine

It is a congener of chloroquine used for chemoprophylaxis of P.Falciparum malaria. It is inexpensive and has substantial activity in chloroquine resistant strains.

Indications

Treatment of infection with some chloroquine-resistant P.falciparum strains.


Dosage

Usually combine with artesunate. Target dose of 4mg/kg/day artesunate and 10mg/kg/day amodiaquine once a day for 3 days, with a therapeutic dose range between 2-10mg/kg/day artesunate and 7.5-15mg/kg/dose amodiaquine.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

Monitor blood count and liver enzymes. Caution should be exercised in patients with G6pD deficiency, nerve disease, any allergy, kidney or liver impairment, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid long-term use of this medication, otherwise vision loss may occur.
