ANTI-ACNE DRUGS

Anti-acne drugs are used to prevent acne by decreasing oil production and inflammation or by treating bacterial infection. The anti-acne drugs are available in both topical and oral preparations. Antibiotics, antiseptics and anti-inflammatory drugs are used to treat acne problems. Tetracycline antibiotics and macrolide antibiotics are commonly used as oral medication and azelaic acid and salicylic acid are used as topical preparations in the treatment. Some anti-androgen agents and isotretinoin are also used.

Indications

Acne, skin infections.


Contra-Indications

Some oral anti-acne preparations are contraindicated in pregnancy, breastfeeding and patients with renal diseases, and hepatic impairment.


Special Precautions

During treatment, avoid overexposure to sunlight and wear protective clothing.


Side Effects

Dry skin, rash, itching, sore throat, swelling, headache, dizziness, and difficulty in breathing.
