Benzonatate

It has an anesthetic (numbing) action similar to that of benzocaine and "numbs" the stretch sensors in the lungs. It is the stretching these sensors with breathing that causes the cough. Benzonatate begins to work within 15 to 20 minutes, and its effects last for approximately 3 hours.

Indications

Coughs caused by common colds, asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, and emphysema.


Dosage

-Oral; 100mg tds. -The typical dosage of benzonatate for adults and children over 10 years old is 100-200 mg orally three times a day as needed. The dosage for children under 10 years old should be determined by a healthcare professional.


Contra-Indications

Benzonatate should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the medication or its components. It is also contraindicated in children under 10 years of age due to the risk of serious side effects.


Special Precautions

Paediatric: Safety below 10 years not established. Pregnancy: Category C. Lactation: Secreted in milk. Elderly: Can be used.


Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, nausea, abnormal mood changes, burning feeling in the eyes, numbness in the chest area.
