Cefetamet Pivoxil Hydrochloride

Cefetamat pivoxil is an oral third generation cephalosporin, which is hydrolysed to from the active agent, cefetamet. It has good penetration through the outer membrane permeability barrier of several gram-negative bacteria. The primary target enzymes of the drug are PBP 1a & 3.

Indications

In both upper and lower community acquired respiratory tract infections due to streptococcus pneumoniae, haemophilus influenzae, moraxella catarrhalis, group-A beta haemolytic streptococci, has marked activity against neisseria gonorrhea and enterobacteriaceae


Dosage

500mg bid for adults and children over 12 years and 10mg/kg bid for children upto 12 years


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to any components of the formulations or to cephalosporins class of drugs.


Special Precautions

In cases of diarrhoea, colitis, pseudomembranous colitis, renal insufficiency, patients with active liver disease or with serum alanine transaminase level (ALT) above 2.5 times the upper limit of normal figures


Side Effects

Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhoea or vomiting).


Drug Interactions

No clinically evident signs or symptoms of interaction were reported in severely ill patients or no impariment of renal function has so far been observed with diuretics.
