DIHYDROERGOTOXINE (Codergocrine)

It is an alpha adrenergic blocker, claimed to selectively increase cerebral blood flow. It is now considered to act by protecting altered brain metabolism. Clinical trials in dementia have shown short term improvement in certain symptoms.

Indications

Primary progressive dementia. Arterio-sclerotic dementia. Multi-infarct dementia. Alzheimer’s dementia.


Dosage

3-5 mg daily individed doses.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to ingredients. Acute or chronic psychoses.


Special Precautions

Acute intermittent porphyria. Concomitent use of caffeine. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Should not be used. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Safe.


Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, nasal stuffiness, cramps, rashes, G.I. disturbances.
