EPALRESTAT

It controls the activity of POLYOL pathway in diabetes, and thereby reduce the complications in the microvasculature that arise as a result of its over activity.

Indications

Diabetic neuropathy (both peripheral and autonomic neuropathy), diabetic retinopathy.


Dosage

Adults : 50mg three times a day orally before each meal for the minimum of 12 weeks.


Contra-Indications

Renal and hepatic impairment.


Special Precautions

Monitor renal and hepatic functions during therapy. Warn the patient that yellow-brown or red urine discolorations is due to epalrestat without any harmful effect. Avoid Breast feeding. Use with caution in Pregnancy.


Side Effects

Elevations in liver enzyme levels, hepatitis, nausea, vomiting thrombocytopenia, elevations of blood urea nitrogen and Creatinine concentrations.
