ETHACRIDINE LACTATE (EMCREDIL)

It is a derivative of acridine dye with properties to induce uterine contractions besides the antibacterial properties of acridines.

Indications

Induction of second trimester abortion (M.T.P.).

Dosage

As extra-aminiotic infusion: 100 ml injected slowly over 10 mins. through catheter, then clamped. 50 ml of it can be injected 4 hrs later. Intravenous oxytocin or sparteine sulphate should be given concurrently.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity, pregnancy.

Special Precautions

History of previous surgery on the uterus or cervix. Nondilating cervix should be reviewed before supplementing oxytocic agents.

Side Effects

Prolonged use delays wound healing.

Drug Interactions

Enhanced activity by alkaline solutions.
