FAMOTIDINE

It is a highly sensitive and potent H2-receptor antagonist that competes with histamines at the receptor sites. It inhibits gastric juice secretion. Famotidine reduces the acid and pepsin content, as well as the volume of basal, nocturnal and stimulated gastric secretion.

Indications

Duodenal or beign gastric ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Dosage

Duodenal or benign gastric ulcer; 20 mg twice daily or 40 mg daily at bed time for 4 to 8 wks. Maintenance therapy: 20 mg daily at bed time for 6-12 months. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome; 20 mg 4 times daily initially Max. 480 mg daily.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.

Special Precautions

Dosage should be reduced in patients wit renal failure. Possibility of gstric malignancy should be excluded. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Use only, if clearly indicated. Lactation: Should not be used. Elderly: No special problem.

Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and anorexia.

Drug Interactions

Absorption reduced when used in combination with antacids.
