FINASTERIDE

Finasteride, a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound, is a competitive and specific inhibitor of 5 alpha-reductase, an intracellular enzyme that converts testosteronoe into DHT. The bioavailability is about 80% and most absorption occurs within 2 hours.

Indications

Treatment of symptomatic Benign atic hyperplasia.


Dosage

5 mg once daily.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity, pregnancy.


Special Precautions

Caution should be used in patients with liver function abnormalities, as finasteride is metabolized extensively in the liver. Paediatrics: Should not be used. Pregnancy: Should not be used. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Safe.


Side Effects

Decreased libido, gynecomastia, impotence and reduced volume of ejaculate.


Drug Interactions

May increase clearance of theohylline by 7% and decrease its half life by 10% after IV aminophylline administration.
